What is all this hype about?
The Wire is the story of a city, Baltimore, the people who live there and the institutions that force them to make compromises. If you want to be more specific you might say it's a critically-acclaimed television crime drama that aired on HBO from 2002 to 2008.
In David Simon's own words: 'Thematically, it's about the very simple idea that, in this Postmodern world of ours, human beings—all of us—are worth less. We're worth less every day, despite the fact that some of us are achieving more and more. It's the triumph of capitalism." (Source:Slate)
Over five seasons the show looks at the drug trade, union longshoremen, the school system, the mayoral race and the print media. Each season's theme contains several sub-plots and occasionally a storyline (e.g. Hamsterdam) will involve all the city's major institutions and tie together themes crossing all five seasons.
Way Down in the Hole (this site) will attempt to make sense of all these plots and characters in a level of over-analysis that you should never do with any good art.
